Reviews
For those absolutely new to photography, this is the best place to start. In a few short pages, Al Judge brings you through the basics of cameras and lenses, from the pin hole, large and medium format, early 35mm, TLR, SLR, mirrorless, to today's digital electronics. He explains the pentlprisim (pentamirror), the mirror, their operation and the viewfinder. He includes a description of aperture, where it is located in the lens. What makes up a camera lens and why there are so many pieces of glass. He discusses shutters, how they are made and operate. He explains film ASA sensitivity and compares it to ISO digital sensors. He talks briefly about sensor size, Pixel size and count, and how pixels record digital information. Will you be an expert when you finish this book? No. But you will understand the basics of how a camera works. And that will lead to a better understanding of how to take beautiful photographs. For those of you that have been using a camera for 40 years, is this book necessary? Maybe not. I've been playing with cameras since the late 60's. But I learned why there are so many pieces of glass in a lens to focus all the colors onto the film/sensor, and why the aperture is where it is, and a lot of other whys that I had before just taken for granted.
